The jaw is a joint, and joints respond to treatment. We assess the whole system—jaw, neck, and the pattern between them—to settle pain and restore normal eating, talking, and sleeping.

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

IT’S NOT JUST
WHERE IT HURTS.

  • →Clicking, popping, or catching when you open your mouth, sometimes with limited range that makes yawning or dental visits difficult
  • →Waking with a tight, fatigued jaw, sore temples, or sensitive teeth after grinding you slept through
  • →Constant tension at the base of your skull and across your shoulders, with headaches or ear pressure that ear exams cannot explain
YOUR PLAN, NOT A TEMPLATE

A CLEARER WAY FORWARD.

Your jaw works every time you eat, speak, yawn, and swallow. It has a disc, capsule, ligaments, and muscles—exactly like joints people accept physical therapy for. Most TMD involves the jaw and neck loading each other, so we treat both. Your evaluation measures opening range, jaw tracking, muscle tenderness, and neck and upper back mobility before we treat either structure.

01

PAIN: Settle the Guarding and Joint Irritation

We begin with hands-on work—gentle joint mobilization at the jaw, soft tissue release for the chewing and neck muscles, and dry needling where muscle guarding will not release on its own. We also give you a short, specific list of jaw habits to pause for now, so you stop reloading the joint throughout your day and night.

02

PRIME: Restore Clean, Even Motion

We work your jaw back toward opening straight and opening far enough to eat and yawn comfortably. At the same time, we restore the neck and upper back mobility your jaw depends on—because the jaw rarely moves well when the neck is stiff. This phase decides whether the pattern sticks.

03

PERFORM and PREVENT: Retrain the Pattern

Resting jaw position, breathing mechanics, sleep setup, and a short daily routine keep the joint from being reloaded every night. This is the part that decides whether it stays gone. We show you what to watch for and how to catch early warning signs before they become a problem again.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START.

Will a night guard fix TMD?+

A night guard can reduce tooth damage from grinding, but it does not address the muscle guarding, disc position, or jaw pattern that caused the problem. Most patients we see have already tried a guard. We treat the jaw and neck structures driving the guarding, so the joint stops being loaded the same way all day and night.

Do I need imaging or a dentist referral to start?+

No. Texas direct access allows you to start physical therapy without a physician or dentist referral. We perform a thorough movement assessment and palpation to identify which structures are irritated and how the jaw tracks on opening. If imaging is needed, we discuss that with you after we understand your pattern.

How long does TMD treatment take?+

Recovery timelines are individual. Most patients see measurable progress—less clicking, wider opening, better sleep—within the first three to four weeks. How long you stay depends on how long the pattern has been there, how much neck involvement exists, and how consistently you apply the retrain phase. We reassess after three visits and adjust the plan if progress is not where it should be.

Can TMD come back after treatment?+

Yes, if the jaw pattern resets. That is why the retrain phase—resting position, breathing, sleep setup, and a short daily routine—is critical. We teach you what early warning signs look like and how to catch them early. Most patients who stick with the prevention routine stay comfortable long-term.

More about TMJ and TMD Treatment in Dallas

The jaw is a joint, and joints respond to treatment.

The temporomandibular joint works every time you eat, speak, yawn, and swallow. It has a disc, a capsule, ligaments, and muscles, exactly like the joints people accept physical therapy for. It also sits directly on top of the neck, which is why the two so rarely have a problem alone.

TMD is the name for what goes wrong in that system: muscles that clench all night, a disc that catches on the way open, a joint that no longer glides evenly side to side. Most people arrive here after a dentist, a night guard, and a long stretch of assuming nothing else could be done. The jaw is treatable, and the neck it sits on usually needs treating with it.

The jaw rarely complains in only one place.

Where it hurts, when it hurts, and what the jaw does on the way open all point at different structures. Most people have several of these at once.

Soreness at the joint just in front of the ear, or a deep ache through the cheek and temple that builds through the day.

A click, pop, or grinding sound when you open or close, sometimes with a catch you have learned to work around.

Not enough room for a sandwich, a full yawn, or a dental visit, sometimes with the jaw drifting to one side as it opens.

Waking with a tired, tight jaw, sore temples, or teeth that feel sensitive after a night of grinding you slept through.

Headaches in the temples, pressure or fullness in the ear, or ringing that an ear exam cannot explain.

Constant tightness at the base of the skull and across the shoulders. The neck loads the jaw, and the jaw loads it back.

We treat the jaw, the neck, and the pattern between them.

Your evaluation measures how far you open, how the jaw tracks on the way down, which muscles are tender to the touch, and how well your neck and upper back move. Jaw symptoms and neck symptoms feed each other, so we assess both before treating either.

Treatment is hands-on and specific: gentle joint work at the jaw, soft tissue release for the chewing and neck muscles, and dry needling where the guarding will not let go on its own. Then we retrain the pattern, opening and closing, tongue and resting jaw position, so the joint stops being loaded the same way all day and all night.

No referral needed to start in Texas, for up to 30 days. In most cases you can be seen within the same week.

A clear path back to eating, talking, and sleeping normally.
